What results were achieved at the Samarkand Climate Forum?
On April 4-5, Uzbekistan hosted another important international event - the Samarkand Climate Forum.
This forum became the first historical event in the history of Central Asia dedicated to the climate issue. The participation of three Deputy Secretary-Generals of the United Nations, heads of UN environmental organizations and conventions, more than 30 ministers and leaders responsible for the environment from several countries, international organizations and agencies (UNCCD, FAO, UNIDO, UNECE, ICBA, etc.), as well as many other foreign experts further increased the prestige of the Forum.
The Green Development Concept was presented at the Forum and it was agreed to take appropriate measures to approve this concept within the framework of COP30 to be held in Brazil.
It is worth noting that Uzbekistan has joined the Climate Club, a voluntary coalition of 43 countries with high climate ambitions, which serves as a platform for sharing experiences on industrial decarbonization and strengthening collective action at the global level, which was officially launched at COP28 in 2023.
For information, the activities of the Climate Club cover three main areas: implementing transparent policies to reduce emissions, transforming industry, and strengthening international cooperation. The main goal of the organization is to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement and accelerate climate action to achieve global net zero emissions.
A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) on “Cooperation in the field of environmental protection, climate action and sustainable use of natural resources”. This Memorandum serves to continue cooperation in the implementation of specific actions and measures in the field of environmental protection, climate change, sustainable use and management of natural resources in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The goal is to contribute to the ecologically, economically and socially sustainable, climate-resilient and low-emission development of Uzbekistan and to support its implementation of various international conventions and agreements.
In addition, a Memorandum was signed between the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic on allocating quotas for training personnel at the Central Asian University for Environmental and Climate Change Studies (“Green University”). According to it, up to 9 quota places will be allocated to students from the Kyrgyz Republic (up to 5 for bachelor's degree programs, up to 4 for master's degree programs). The Memorandum aims to increase the number of potential personnel in the field of regional cooperation and sustainable development, environmental studies and climate change.
In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding on strategic cooperation was signed between the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Uzbekistan. According to it, mutually beneficial cooperation will be developed in the areas of environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation, disaster risk reduction and strengthening the resilience of children and youth by ensuring that essential services for children are inclusive, sustainable and prepared for environmental risks. Also, children's participation in relevant environmental issues will be expanded and their health will be made a priority.
